Welcome to the Nursing Strategic Plan Tracking Site!
| Alaska is in the midst of a serious and worsening nursing shortage. A joint university and industry task force convened early in 2002 to develop strategies to meet the current and projected demand for new graduate nurses. |
Since 2001, the UAA School of Nursing has been working hard to more than double its capacity to help address the critical nursing shortage in Alaska and the country. We are well on our way to that goal. For these past several years the School has been focused on the expansion, and has accomplished a great deal, including:
- Expanding the baccalaureate nursing program by increasing the number of students in each admission cohort and admitting students three times per year instead of twice.
- Expanding the associate degree nursing program by adding outreach sites in many communities in Alaska.
- Adding a masters degree in nursing education to begin to “grow our own” faculty.
- Taking the practical nursing program to several distance sites at community request.
- Improving the distance delivery of nursing courses
In 2004, the faculty and staff of the School of Nursing decided it was time to broaden the focus beyond the expansion project, and began with an update of the School’s Vision Statement and a comprehensive strategic plan. While some of the plan’s objectives are related to continuing the expansion of the School and the development of its programs, others will address improvements to communication, student responsiveness, and faculty recruitment, retention and development.
This website is established to track progress on the many tasks involved in carrying out the strategic plan. We hope you find our process and projects interesting. If you have questions about the plan, the expansion, or other questions about the School, please feel free to click on the “?” question mark and send your inquiry or comments.
