UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Pre-Nursing students: Students pursuing an undergraduate degree (either the AAS or the BS) are admitted to UAA as pre-nursing majors; while they complete prerequisite course work and the clinical admissions process. Enrollment as a pre-nursing major enables students to utilize the advising services of the Coordinator of Student Affairs. Members of the nursing faculty are also available for advising, consultation and career exploration. This also ensures that students interested in gaining admission to clinical nursing courses are identifiable so that they may receive information about current requirements and deadlines as well as upcoming changes in general requirements and degree applicable courses.

There are approximately 300-400 pre-nursing majors on the Anchorage campus; of those, 125-150 have specified an interest in pursuing the AAS degree, while 175-200+ have plans to earn the BS degree. The AAS program also had over 100 pre-nursing majors spread across eleven UA community campus sites outside of Anchorage.

AAS Clinical Nursing Majors: Each fall, 32 first year students are admitted to the AAS program on the Anchorage campus and up to 48 second year students continue in nursing courses on the Anchorage campus leading to the AAS degree. The additional second year students are LPNs, transfer or returning AAS nursing students who are admitted and/or readmitted as they meet requirements for advanced placement in the program. In addition, the AAS nursing program is offered via blended distance delivery at eleven UA community campus Outreach locations outside of Anchorage. Each spring limited numbers of first year students are admitted to the AAS program at these distance Outreach campus locations with there being between 40-50+ first year and about 40-50+ second year students annually. This leads to a total of up to 170-180 AAS nursing clinical students annually. Upon entry into the AAS nursing major, each student is assigned to a nursing faculty member for academic advising with Outreach distance sites advised by their local AAS nursing faculty.

BS Clinical Nursing Students: Up to 40 students are admitted to the baccalaureate clinical major each trimester. Given a five-semester sequence of courses, at any given time, there is a potential for a total of 200 students to be actively enrolled in clinical course work. Because some students opt to not continue their pursuit of a degree at UAA for personal or family reasons, on average, the number of baccalaureate clinical students is approximately 180 students each semester. Nearly 10% are currently licensed as Registered Nurses in Alaska.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

The composition of the graduate student body varies widely depending upon the number of specialty tracks to which students have been admitted each year. Typically, students are admitted to the specialty track of Family Nurse Practitioner each year. Every other year admission to the specialty track in Advanced Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing and the Nursing Education specialty is also typical. Students are admitted to the specialty track in Health Care Administration when a sufficiently sized cohort of students (at least 6-8 students) is available to enroll in specialty courses.

Students not ready to pursue clinical specialty course work may be admitted to graduate study in nursing prior to making application to a specialty track.

At any given time there are between 40 to 50 graduate students. The majority of these graduate students are in the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty.
