SERVING ALASKA NATIVE AND AMERICAN INDIAN NURSING STUDENTS

PURPOSE and MISSION

The NURSING WORKFORCE DIVERSITY PROGRAM (NWDP) seeks to provide Assistance and Support to Ethnic Minority nursing students, as well as Economically Educationally Disadvantaged nursing students of any ethnic background. The program goals are to see the number of ethnic minorities in the nursing workforce grow to match that of Alaska's diverse population and to increase the opportunities for educationally and economically disadvantaged students. The program was actually modeled after the successes of the RRANN program.

Launched Spring 2007, the NWDP seeks to serve a diverse population of students in the Associates of Applied Science (AAS) and the Baccalaureate of Science (BS) nursing programs. The program is equipped for approximately 75 students and since it's inception, NWDP has been able to assist over 50 nursing students with additional financial, social and moral support!

Incoming applicants for the NWDP Stipend Program must meet Two out of Three Eligibility Criteria. They are:
  1. ETHNIC MINORITY:
Nursing students who are UNDERREPRESENTED in the Alaska Nursing workforce. Presently, all ethnics other than caucasians are underrepresented.
  2. ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED:
Nursing students of any ethnic background whose family or individual's annual income falls below a level based on low-income thresholds established by the US Census Bureau.
  3. EDUCATIONALLY DISADVANTAGED:
Nursing students of any ethnic background which includes FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS or students for whom the K-12 environment has inhibited obtaining the needed knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in higher education.
