SERVING ALASKA NATIVE AND AMERICAN INDIAN NURSING STUDENTS

THE STIPEND PROCESS
 

The Stipend Program is designed to provide financial assistance to students that qualify within the RRANN and NWD programs. The stipend is similar to a scholarship, but with added participation required.

The Stipend amount for qualified, full-time Pre-Nursing Recipients for Spring 2010 are estimated to be a minimum of $125 for January and $250 for February - April. The Stipend amount for qualified part-time, Recipients for Spring 2010 are estimated to be $62.50 for January and $125 for February - April.

The Stipend amount for Nursing Majors, Spring 2010 will be a minimum of $150 for January, $300 for February - April and a minimum of $150 for May.

The Stipend amount for NWD Nursing Majors, Spring 2010 will be a minimum of $137.50 for January, $275 for February - April and a minimum of $137.50 for May.

Due to funding issues, stipends are offered on a semester to semester basis. However, the stipends are normally available:

  • BS Nursing Majors / all three semesters
  • AAS Nursing Majors / Spring and Fall (only)
  • Pre-Nursing Students / Spring and Fall (only after their qualifying semester)
  • Distant Sites Majors / Spring and Fall (only)
  • Distant Sites Pre-Nursing / Spring and Fall (only after their qualifying semester)

**THERE IS NO STIPEND FUNDING AT THIS TIME FOR NWDP PRE-NURSING STUDENTS**

APPLICANTS

Nursing Majors and Pre-Nursing students who have or who are applying for the stipend, but have not successfully completed all paperwork (majors) or are waiting to complete their qualifying semester (pre-nursing).

RECIPIENTS

Nursing Majors and Pre-Nursing students who have successfully completed all paperwork and have completed their qualifying semester.

**Nursing Majors do NOT have to complete a pre-qualifying semester. As long as they meet the requirements, they are eligible to immediately begin receiving a monthly stipend.**

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

RRANN PRE-NURSING - QUALIFYING SEMESTER

  1. Students who wish to become stipend RECIPIENTS need to complete a pre-qualifying semester only once. During this pre-qualifying semester, a student must meet all of the regular requirements which are listed below. After this semester has been completed, a student will be considered a qualified Recipient for a Stipend, the following semester.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Be Alaska Native or American Indian as documented by (a) Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB) or (b) proof of enrollment and/or descendant of an original enrollee under Section 5 of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
  2. Be admitted to the University of Alaska Anchorage as a Pre-Nursing Major in the BS or AAS nursing program or to the UAS Nursing Certificate program.
  3. Full-Time Applicants: Enroll in a minimum of twelve credits per semester. Complete the semester with a minimum of nine credits.
    Part-Time Applicants: Enroll in 6 to 11 credits per semester. Complete the semester with a minimum of six credits.

  4. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  5. Attend a MANDATORY Informational meeting to be held at the beginning of the semester.
  6. Attend one on-site meeting or distance delivered teleconference per month as scheduled.
  7. Meet with a designated RRANN staff person once per month (see above).
  8. Turn in a mid-semester Academic Progress Report at 1 to 3 weeks prior to the withdrawal deadline.
  9. Meet with a School of Nursing Academic Advisor once per academic year to create and/or review your individual Plan of Study.
  10. Complete one Community Service assignment per academic year.
  11. ANCHORAGE ONLY - Participate in a minimum of one Recitation session per week for the entire semester.

Students will be notified by mail at the beginning of each month regarding eligibility from the previous month.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

RRANN NURSING MAJORS - ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Be Alaska Native or American Indian as documented by (a) Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB) or (b) proof of enrollment and/or descendant of an original enrollee under Section 5 of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
  2. Must be a student in good standing with the UAA School of Nursing and with the UAA Financial Aid Department and officially enrolled in the BS or AAS Nursing program, taking nursing classes for the current semester.

    If a RRANN AAS or BS student becomes placed on Academic Warning or is deemed ineligible for Financial Aid during any stipend month, the student must meet with their RRANN Facilitator and complete a Plan of Action every month until reinstatement of Good Standing or Financial Aid. If the student fulfills this requirement, they will still be eligible for the stipend for that month.

  3. Attend one group on-site meeting or distance delivered teleconference per month.
  4. Meet with a designated RRANN staff person once per semester.
  5. Complete one community service assignment per academic year.
  6. Students enrolled in Pharmacology or Pathophysiology must attend the Recitation Session for that course every week (1.5/hours) in order to earn their monthly stipend. Time, date and location will be determined by students and Recitation Leaders each semester.
  7. Graduating students must submit an article for the RRANN newsletter along with a photograph prior to graduation date in order to earn their last stipend check.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

NWDP NURSING MAJORS - ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Declare two or more of the following categories and provide proof by submitting requested documentation along with the Verification of Eligibility form:
    ETHNIC MINORITY nursing students who are underrepresented in the Alaska nursing workforce. Applies to all ethnicities with the exception of Caucasian.
    ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED nursing students of any ethnic background whose family or individual's annual income falls below a level based on low-income thresholds established by the US Census Bureau.
    EDUCATIONALLY DISADVANTAGED nursing students of any ethnic background which includes first generation college students or students for whom the k-12 environment has inhibited obtaining the needed knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in higher education.

In addition to these qualifiers, the students:

  1. Must be a student in good standing with the UAA School of Nursing and with the UAA Financial Aid Department and officially enrolled in the BS or AAS Nursing Program, taking nursing classes for the current semester.

    if an NWD student becomes placed on Academic Warning or is deemed ineligible for Financial Aid during any stipend month, the student must meet with their NWD Facilitator and complete a Plan of Action every month until reinstatement of Good Standing or Financial Aid. If the student fulfills this requirement, they will still be eligible for the stipend for that month.

  2. Attend one NWDP group on-site meeting or distance delivered teleconference per month.
  3. Meet with your designated NWD staff person once per semester. Students who are physically separated from NWD staff, must contact their facilitator by phone once per semester.
  4. Students enrolled in Pharmacology or Pathophysiology must attend the Recitation Session for that course every week (1.5 hours) in order to earn their monthly stipend. Time, date and location will be determined by students and Recitation Leaders each semester. Recitation Sessions begin the first week of classes.
  5. Complete one Community Service assignment per academic year.
  6. Graduating students must submit an article for the NWDP newsletter, along with a photograph prior to graduation date in order to earn their last stipend check.
