Breakthrough to Nursing is a project designed to increase the cultural diversity of the nursing profession, and, in Alaska, specifically to increase the number and proportion of Alaska Native Registered Nurses. Project members have raised money to fund the production of a recruitment poster and recruitment video and are currently distributing the poster, video, and information about nursing careers and educational programs to students throughout the State. An ongoing project of Breakthrough to Nursing is the establishment of a Mentorship Program.
The Breakthrough to Nursing Project produced a poster designed to recruit Alaska Natives to a career in nursing. In 1996, the poster received first place honors at the Annual Convention of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). The poster has been widely distributed to high schools and Native health care organizations across the state. Copies may be obtained on request.
"Give Back to Your Community: Become a Nurse," an award winning video was produced by Breakthrough to Nursing in 1997. Approximately 20 minutes long, it received first place honors at the 1998 NSNA Convention and received a Sigma Theta Tau Region I Public Media Award (1998). The video has been widely distributed across the state; copies may be obtained on request. To request a copy of the video and/or a copy of the poster, contact aynurse@uaa.alaska.edu.
